Thank you so much for your thoughts on soul which I completely echo. My husband Fred Kaan the hymn-writer died on Oct 2 2009 and we had a day of celebration for him on Oct 12 when I told everyone to wear coloured clothes. Others spoke about Fred, but I did too and I would like to quote one part
I would sometimes on a lovely day go out and have a climb on my own (We live in the Lake District UK). When I got back Fred would always ask me how I had got on. I often choose to go to a quieter mountain and would say on returning ‘I haven’t seen a soul all day’ to which Fred would ask me ‘What does a soul look like?’

I don’t know what a soul looks like either. Fred always felt that life was in the here and now and I do not believe in life after death, but all I can say is that whatever soul means I hope a bit of Fred’s soul can live on in you, as it does in me, remaining a precious part of me.

In Fred’s words:

Pray that at the end of living
of philosphies and creeds,
God will find his people busy
Planting trees and sewing seeds.

As always, thanks so much, Ian! I have continued to be challenged and moved by all the articles on both this site, as well as the former SBNR site. I continue to find them an inspiration which, amongst other influences, both motivate, and fire me up for the day's activities. This article,in particular rings so true. Far too often in many churches(thankfully not mine!!), far too much attention is focussed on preparing for the "next life", as opposed to focussing on the major issues facing our world(i.e climate change, solidarity with the poor, modest living etc.), and living life now. One of my favourite authors, Marcus Borg, mentions in both "The Heart of Christinity-Rediscovering A Life of Faith-How we can be Passionate Believers Today" and also in "The Meaning of Jesus-Two Visions"(with N.T Wright), says, that Jesus seems to have believed in some form of afterlife, but he doesn't talk about it much. For the most part, the subject is usually brooched by someone else. Rather, living life now.

Thankyou Iris. How kind of you to write. Only a sensitive soul could be so generous and encouraging. I will print off your note and read it often

This is SO beautiful.Thanks.I have not come across anything so soulful and beautiful for long.
The truth of it, the humour in places, the reality of it all is soul-stirring indeed.
Thanks again.
I shall print it out and read it often and share it with others too.
Only a very sensitive soul could SEE like this and only a poet could express it so beautifully.
Rapt!
